Using Mental Training To Drop Your Score On The Golf Course By Shaun Smith – Absolute Mental Training
Mental training for athletes is a relatively new performance enhancement tool but is picking up ground like no other area has been able to do. Professionals from all sports have begun to realize that with a little bit of mental training they can accomplish amazing feats. Bobby Jones was quoted saying that "golf is played on a five inch course- the distance between your ears. Johnny Miller said that "golf is 90 percent mental, the other 10 percent is perspiration. Mental training is not for the sick. Mental training is for golfers of all levels, from beginner to pro. One of the most publicized golfers who uses a mental training coach is Tiger Woods. Tiger Woods is one of the greatest golfers of all time yet he uses a mental training coach because he understands the demands placed on the mind during golf. Every movement, every decision, every thought must first go through your mind before you can swing the golf club. No longer can you as a golfer ignore the advantages that a mental training program can do for your golf game and decrease your score when out on the links.Lets look at what benefits you can receive from a mental training program:
- The first benefit of mental training is that mental training will provide you with direction through goal setting so that you can work towards being a better golfer. Goal setting can provide you with a road map to success. No longer will you be moving towards your goal of getting better blindly and without a solid plan.
- A second benefit from mental training is learning how to focus on what it is that you are doing on the golf course. The golf course is full of distractions, including ourselves and our thoughts. Mental training is about learning how to shift your focus to the correct stimuli and then not allowing any distractions to creep into your mind and cause you to yip on a put or top a ball off of your drive.
- A third benefit is that through mental training you can learn what your optimal arousal level is and how to enter this optimal arousal level on a regular basis. We all have an optimal arousal level where we can achieve almost anything. This is often called getting in the zone and research shows there is an optimal arousal level for each of us. The problem is that for each of us it is different and it may take working with a mental coach to find it and learn how to achieve it on a regular basis.
- A fourth benefit is learning how to control your emotions. Many golfers I work with admit that they struggle to have a consistent round because one mistake or one bad shot changes their whole round and they become frustrated with their current game. This frustration takes over their round of golf and they can do nothing but spiral out of control into failure.
- A fifth benefit for golfers through mental training is a pre-round routine as well as a pre-shot routine. Watch Tiger Woods next chance you can. He completes both routines every time that he is on the golf course. This allows him to commit to his shots and reassure himself that he has made the correct decision and can make this shot. Learn how to use a pre-round or pre-shot routine and you will lower your score.
